Going Green, Going Back
Go Green Inside has evolved from the seed of an idea I had nearly 10 years ago.
Back in 2006, Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, was released, and suddenly (finally!) it seemed that environmental awareness had gone mainstream.
At that time, I was running a charitable organization I co-founded, called the Holistic Health Research Foundation of Canada, whose mandate was to advance scientific research, health professional and public education in natural medicine. I went to meet with someone from our scientific advisory board over lunch, and we started chatting about the movie.
I said to Trish, ‘Everyone is talking about going green for the external environment, which is great. But I also want people to start talking about going green for our internal environment, because the two are connected — what we do to one we do to the other. I want us to go green inside.’
Lightbulb moment!!
I went off in a flurry of inspiration to gather my ideas for GoGreenInside®, which I envisioned as a public education campaign to help explain the principles of natural medicine.
Although we didn’t end up fully launching the campaign back then, GoGreenInside® had a rebirth in 2012 when I launched a creative online publishing venture here at GoGreenInside.com. My mission was to bring together experts in natural health, as well as green living and personal growth, to inspire and empower people to become sustainable from the inside out. I put together blog posts, interviews, and, in 2014, a telesummit, all valuable resources that you can still find on the site.
As I’ve grown, so has this little seed, deepening its roots, and blossoming organically into what it wants to be next — a resource and community for midlife women to help you nourish your inner sustainability at the most important and powerful time of your life; to become the most vibrantly healthy, happy, connected and creative that you can be.
About me…
Here are 7 things I’d like you to know about me since we’re going to be spending some quality time together. Perhaps you’ll find some things in here that resonate with you too…
- I believe passionately in the power of nature -- and natural medicine -- to heal and have a deep desire to share what I’ve learned with others to help end needless suffering.
- Just about everything that’s joyful or heartfelt or beautiful* on social media or TV moves me to tears, even game show contestants getting the chance to win “A NEW CAR!!!!!” (this embarrasses my daughter to no end, which just makes me laugh -- it’s been in the genes for generations and she’s next!)
*Many sad and even painful things can be beautiful too and of course these make me cry as well. - Despite #2, when it comes to the stuff in my own life, I often have to work diligently to acknowledge and feel my feelings, which I believe is one of the keys to accelerating healing, alongside #1.
- Dancing has woven its way through most of my life. I’m learning how to move more authentically and joyfully as I age. My two favorite forms of dance are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum** -- competitive ballroom and latin dancing (structured, choreographed, and performed) and freestyle/ecstatic dance (wild, intuitive and danced from within).
**Midlife women are full of contradictions. How awesome is that?! See #7. - I actually grew up completely disconnected from nature - living in apartment buildings in the middle of a big city. It wasn’t until one autumn when I was nearly 30, at a weekend retreat on many sprawling acres of wood and stream, that I discovered the power of nature to reconnect and heal. From there, my love of nature, and natural medicine, bloomed side by side. Which makes perfect sense, because they are completely connected.
- I’m naturally curious about many things, and get excited about new ideas and projects. These keep life interesting and are sometimes distracting, AND I always return to my soul work, with GoGreenInside® at its center. (The “all new and improved” GoGreenInside® brings together all the things I most love to do, be and share!)
- I spent a lot of years wanting and trying to fit in, but continually made unconventional choices that set me apart, from choosing competitive ballroom dancing as a childhood hobby (30+ years before Dancing With the Stars made it popular) to starting a charity that advocated for complementary and alternative medicine. Having reached 50, I’m finally getting comfortable in my own skin -- and am very excited about building this community of women who wish to embrace life on their own terms.
